Prazeres - Ponta do Pargo |
We start this leisure walk at
Prazeres and, after about 4
hours of walking, we will arrive
at the extreme southwestern
point of Madeira, the
lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo
which is located at 310 m above
sea level and thus the highest
of its kind in Portugal. The drive
to the levada is already filled
with spectacular sun-drenched |

pictures of the charming southwest. Above the coast and far below
the enormous plateau Paúl da Serra, the levada winds through an
idyllic a rea which is partly rustic and mainly agriculturally
used. The views along the coast of the southwest and to the
northwest end this walk in a, once more, diff e rent landscape of
this beautiful island. Another version of this walk starts in
Cabo, following later the same levada |

Levada Rabaçal |
We go towards the west coast of the island up to
the Paúl da Serra (±1200 m) to Rabaçal. Rabaçal is an enchanting
fairyland of singing waterfalls. Here at the head of Madeira`s
largest valley, the Rabaçal house lies dwarfed beneath emerald
mountains. Three levadas
draw their water here; each has its own personality and this walk
introduces you to all
three of them.Standard day: Tuesday |

Boa Ventura |
On this walk, you may
discover one of the most original regions of Madeira – here, time
seems to
have come to a hold: the valley of Boa Ventura. On our route, we
find old paths that were laid out in
t roublesome hand labour, as well as the Levada de Cima which has,
to a great deal, a natural course and which we follow till its
romantic spring. A walk of contrasts: mountains, valleys and the
sea.-

The enchanting emerald green and
mossy paradise of the tropical rain
forest on Madeira! First we take the
path beside the old Levada do
Calderão Verde which then will take us to
one of the most remote areas of the
island with spectacular views. A huge
waterfall forms the caldron. There we
will have our picnic. |

LEVADA WALK TO SANTO DA SERRA |
|
|
This rather easy walk
takes place in the higher part of the district of Santa Cruz.
There, the valleys are still fitted out with agricultural t e
rraces on which, even nowadays, some locals still
grow their vegetables
and fruit. During the walk, secluded villages take turns with deep,
green valleys offering beautiful views down to the southeast coast
with Santa Cruz and Ponta São Lourenço. Each season has its own
bloom and vegetation. Even some small parts of the native laure l
forest (Laurissilva) could be preserved. The day will be concluded
by visiting the weekly Sunday market in Santo da Serra . |
